Sewing a fall wardrobe, in my opinion, is the easiest and coziest wardrobe you can sew. Another thing that I love about a fall wardrobe is that it can work right into a winter wardrobe. Sewing a fall wardrobe is a fun and creative way to get ready for the cooler weather. With cozy fabrics like knits, fleece, flannel and wool, you can make warm and stylish pieces like sweaters, scarves, jackets, pants, and more. Plus, you get to choose colors and patterns that fit your personal style, from rich earth tones to trendy fall prints. Sewing your own fall clothes also allows you to create custom-fit garments that feel comfortable and look great. Whether it’s a pair of pants, a cozy dress, or a stylish layering piece, it’s a great way to refresh your wardrobe for the season! Let’s talk more in detail about some pieces that I feel will create an amazing, wearable fall wardrobe.
Cardigans
Cardigan has got to be the most loved fall piece in everyone’s wardrobe. Cardigans are so versatile and offers so many options and ways to wear them. Layers are welcomed by most during this season of ever changing weather, and cardigans allows just that. You can easily remove them if you get too warm, and put them back on if you get a little chilly. There are also a few different styles of cardigans you can sew to suit your wardrobe needs.
Sleeveless, short-sleeve, and long-sleeve cardigans can be worn over a long-sleeve shirt, short-sleeve shirt, or tank top. The type and weight of the knit used, will determine the type of top to layer it with.
Cardigans also come in different lengths, and depending on the fabric, you can make these as casual or as dressy as you would like. You can pair it with jeans, skirts, joggers, dresses, and then choose your favorite fall shoes or boots to finish the look.
Tops
One thing that I have noticed about many top trends in the fall season is there are not many prints, but instead, solid fall colors that create beautiful combinations. During the fall, you usually see lots of different shades of ivory, brown, orange, burgundy, green, purple, and black. Yes, there are other colors, but these are lots of the common colors you will spot in stores, online, and in fall fabric selections.
Tops are definitely a staple in the fall wardrobe, from tank tops to long sleeves, to bring outfits together. I personally don’t think that there is a such thing as too many tops during this season, because there is a lot of mixing and matching happening.
Sweaters
Sweaters are definitely one item that I think is so important to customize to your liking. Depending on whether you are cold or hot natured will depend on the type of knit you prefer. This is important, because you don’t want to get overheated because of heavy knit, or too cold because of thin knit. When sweaters are worn, they’re usually worn as the top to whatever bottoms you are wearing, so there’s not a lot of layering that can just be pulled off.
When sewing sweaters for your fall wardrobe, make sure it’s the right knit fabric just for you so that you can actually enjoy and wear it.
Pants
When it comes to pants in the fall, you have many options, depending on the type of shoes you decide to pair them with. Most of the time, a variety of boots or tennis shoes are usually what’s worn in the fall. Knowing what pants to sew for the fall totally depends on you and what your preference of comfort is. Here are a few types of pants that are widely seen worn in the fall.
- Leggings – usually worn with boots or tennis shoes
- Jeans – usually worn with boots, tennis shoes, loafers, flats, and pumps
- Joggers or Casual Sweats – usually worn with tennis shoes, ankle tie-up boots, or short furry boots
- Wide Leg Pants – usually worn with ankle boots, tennis shoes, or dress shoes
As you can see, pants do play a very important role in the fall wardrobe, and this is also an item that can be mixed and matched with many of the tops and cardigans previously discussed.
Jackets
Just like cardigans, jackets play a very big roll in the fall wardrobe. Most jackets are usually worn to keep you warm in the chilly outdoors and then removed shortly after going inside. A jean jacket or a blazer is the ultimate staple in a lot of wardrobes, because they can be paired with almost anything, and they can actually be worn as a part of the outfit. It’s always a good idea to have some of these particular jackets sewn up to wear with several of your me-made pieces.
Skirts
Of course, when we think of fall wardrobe pieces, we don’t usually think of skirts, but skirts actually do fit very well into the fall wardrobe. Sewing skirts are some of the easiest pieces to sew and there are so many different styles that make a fall outfit very trendy. There are options of short, medium, and long lengths. There are also so many warm fabrics that you can use to make your skirts fall ready. Whatever you do, make it comfortable for you to wear.
Scarves
You cannot have a fall wardrobe without scarves! This is one accessory item that can be worn with just about any fall outfit. This is also one item that you can sew or use one of your other skills like crochet, or knitting. Scarves can be made in so many different colors and textures. This insures that it serves two great purposes, keeping you warm and stylish at the same time.
Now that you have some ideas on sewing a fall wardrobe, it’s time to get into the fun of putting it together. Go through your patterns, see what you can mix and match, and then sew the fall wardrobe you have always dreamed of having!

Hi Martika,
How are you doing with your Diabetes? I do remember when you mentioned that it was discovered that you were diabetic. It’s not an easy journey, but it is one that we are on. I am also diabetic. I have been for about 20 years or so. My numbers are down in the pre-diabetic range. It took work to get there. Be sure to take care of yourself. Thank you for this article on creating a Fall wardrobe. I am redoing most of the clothes in my closet. I have lost a little more than 100 lbs. It took me almost 3 years to do it. I’m retired and really don’t go anywhere, so I don’t want to make or buy any new clothes since I have all these clothes from when I was working. Take care and thank you.

Hi! I am doing well. You are so right about this not being an easy journey with diabetes, but it’s worth the fight. With Diabetes Awareness coming up in November, you’ll be seeing a lot more about it. Thank you!
