Using your sewing skills or even learning how to sew right now is definitely a good idea for the times we are currently in. Costs for food and homes are rising, people are losing their jobs, and things are uncertain. Even if all the skills you have are the basics, they will come in very handy and I’m going to give you some reason why in this post.
1. You Can Save Money On Clothes
Usually, someone who sews clothes do have some experience in sewing. However, even if you are just learning, there are some very basic and simple pieces that you can sew that will not only advance your skills, but save you money. These are things like easy to sew t-shirts, dresses, skirts, and even pants. There are numerous patterns for beginners that will show you step-by-step, exactly how to sew these things. In a lot of cases, sewing your own clothes is really affordable, even though there are some that say it isn’t. This depends on the fabric you are purchasing and this can also be a simple as repurposing some clothing items that you already have and no longer wear. Another idea is picking up larger clothing from the thrift stores that you can repurposes, and even grabbing some bed sheets, curtaines, and table clothes while you’re there. It’s all fabric so you have to unlock your creativity and figure out what you can make with them.
2. You Can Tailor Your Clothes To Fit YOU
I will be totally honest and tell you that my most comfortable clothes are the ones I made myself. This is because they are customized for me. By taking the time and getting the fit right for your body can go a very long way when it comes to your comfort.
3. You Can Repair Instead Of Replacing
This alone saves lot of money. It may be ripped clothing, a broken zipper, or a missing button. These situations can get very expensive if taken to an alterations shop, but if you just keep these type of notions around, you can make the repairs yourself. It’s also funny how things like this happens to our favorite items. Even if there’s a stain on your clothing, depending on the fabric type, you can just dye it and change the color of the item, while preserving something you enjoy wearing.
4. Make Your Own Home Decor
Making your own home decor, not only adds a personal touch, but it also allows you to change the look of your space. Something as simple as pillow cases can change the entire look of your sofas in your living room or even the bedding in your bedroom. Making color coordinating pot holder and towels can change the look of your kitchen. Even making your own curtains can change the whole look of rooms in your home. The plus side of making your own home decor is the fact that you are not going to see it in anyone else’s home.
5. Create Unique Gifts
This one not only saves you money, but it also saves you gas and time by not shopping around for hours trying to find the perfect gift for someone. Sewing gifts to give is a lot of fun and the recipient is even more appreciate of the fact that you took out the time to sew something just for them. To save time, you can even batch sew some items to have stored up and give when the time is right. This is also a great way to use up scrap fabric remnants and notions that might be taking up space in your sewing area.
6. Avoiding Fast Fashion Cost
This kind of goes back to the beginning where I talked about sewing your own clothes. If you’re like me, there was a time when shopping used to be really fun, especially when new fashions came out, but that’s no longer the case. I don’t enjoy shopping for clothes that I know I can make and save the over-priced cost that’s put on them.
7. Use Your Fabric Scraps
You can make so many things out of your fabric scraps! There are bags and even smaller items that can be made by using larger pieces of fabric scraps, or even sewing fabric scraps together to make a unique design. Fabric scraps can even be used to make things and sell them for some extra cash on the side. Quilting is also a place where fabric scraps come in handy.
8. Customize Your Style For Less
Creating your own style is not only fun, but stylish as well. I like to do this by taking two different patterns and creating sets. You can use monochromatic colors or several different colors that compliment each other. It doesn’t matter the pieces, you are simply making this your own.
9. Turn Your Sewing Into A Side Hustle
You can definitely make some extra money on the side with your sewing skills. The opportunities are endless! You just simply choose what you enjoy sewing and get to it. You might like to sew for others or do alterations, you may like to sew baby items or doll clothes, and you may even like to sew home decor to sell. There are unlimited opportunities in selling your handmade items.
How do you sell them? There are marketplaces online and some are even free. Most states have craft show and vendor events in lots of cities where you can set up and sell. You can also host your own home shows where you can invite others over and show what you have made to sell. This idea even works well when you can get a friend to host a show for you and invite their own guests, but don’t forget to have a gift for the host. I would say, “Set your goal and sell!”
10. You Gain A Lifelong Skill
Whether you learned to sew at a young age or you are just starting out, this is a lifelong skill that you can refer back to for yourself or even to make a little money. Never hesitate to try something new with your sewing machine, because it can take you very far!
These are the reasons why I believe that you should start sewing now! If you would like a little more insight on these points, be sure to watch my video below.
